Since it involves the use of natural laws and phenomena that are publicly accessible and not the property of an individual, patenting such a product is not possible in a legal sense. Patent laws do not allow the patenting of natural laws, physical phenomena, or ideas.

Therefore, Bergstresser believed that patenting the Tesla Purple Plate was impossible and also inappropriate, as it would mean someone becoming the owner of natural phenomena, which contradicts the basic principles of intellectual property. Various manufacturers compete in the Tesla plate market and claim theirs as the original, but this is not true, and there is no single "original" product. While specific technical processes, manufacturing details, or innovative designs can be patented, the basic principle of the plate's operation cannot.
