Cymbals – Tibetan tingshas
Tingshas (ding-shas, Tibetan cymbals) are used as a sound offering in Buddhist spiritual practice and during meditation, where regular strikes help maintain focus. Sound offerings are common in puja (prayer rituals), which also use bells, drums, cymbals and horns. Today, Tibetan cymbals are often used in feng shui, for space and aura cleansing, energy healing and sound tuning.
What are Tibetan cymbals used for?
When you strike the two cymbals together, they create a bright, clear, high sound that purifies the atmosphere and brings a feeling of peace. Their purpose is to awaken our awareness, remind us who we truly are and help us recognise our priorities in this often turbulent and illusory world.
Cymbals and feng shui
In feng shui, tingshas are used to cleanse and open the energy in a room. Gently striking the cymbals in each of the four corners of the space helps to awaken and balance the flow of energy. When incense cannot be used, cymbals are an excellent alternative for energetically cleansing the home or workspace.
Cymbals and healing sound
In addition to balancing the auric field, Tibetan cymbals are used to mark the beginning and end of meditation or sound healing sessions. It is often said that the clear tone of the cymbals quickly brings us back into the “here and now”, dispersing scattered thoughts and grounding us in the present moment.
How to store the cymbals
After use, it is recommended to wrap the cymbals in a soft cloth or keep them in a dedicated pouch. This protects the metal from scratches and also helps prevent damage to the cord or strap between the cymbals.
Ornaments on the cymbals
The cymbals are often decorated with dragons, mantras or the Eight Tibetan Auspicious Symbols, but they can also be left completely plain. Each motif has its own meaning – from protection and wisdom to good fortune, spiritual growth and harmony – and further enriches their energetic effect.
