What is White Copal?

Bursera bipinnata is a small tree or shrub that grows in the arid and semi-arid regions of Mexico. It is commonly found in regions such as Jalisco, Michoacán, and Colima. The resin of the white copal tree is light yellow to yellowish-brown and has a characteristic scent. It is a solid substance that can be dissolved in alcohol.

Traditional Use of White Copal

Pre-Hispanic cultures were well aware of the effects of white copal and used it for ritual, ceremonial, festive, therapeutic, and medicinal purposes. Ancient Mexicans regarded copal as a protective god, calling it Iztacteteo, meaning white god, due to its white smoke. In Aztec and Mayan finds, copal has been found in the form of small tortillas or corn kernels, suggesting it was food for the gods.

Copal is still used in rituals throughout Mexico, Central, and South America today. In South America, it holds a similar status to frankincense in Europe and the Middle East. Due to its powerful, bright energy, white copal is an important ingredient for incense rituals.

About the Scent of White Copal

The scent of white copal is woody-sweet with a distinct citrus note.

Effects

Copal relaxes, harmonizes, purifies, and creates a positive atmosphere. It is known for its calming effects and is rich in triterpenes, which have been shown to reduce anxiety. The smoke of this resin is said to activate "ion" channels in the brain, helping to alleviate stress. These calming effects of copal also allow the body to relax, unburden, and prepare for sleep. Since ancient times, it has been used to promote emotional balance and soothe the nervous system.

  • clears stagnant and negative energy in the space and creates a warm space for the flow of creativity,
  • creates a sacred space and strengthens the aura,
  • works on the crown chakra and is recommended for meditation,
  • connects with the Sun and the element of fire.

How to Use

Used on an incense charcoal briquette or charcoal. Use on a mesh is not recommended as the resin quickly becomes liquid. A particularly fragrant experience is achieved by using white copal in an incense bowl instead of just on a briquette. Warning: Never leave smoldering incense unattended.

Incenses it Pairs Well With

White copal pairs perfectly with cedar, juniper, and palo santo.

What is the Difference Between Copals?

Copal incense is available in various versions with similar scents. Black copal is considered by some to be the most desirable due to its rich and intense scent. Gold copal has the sweetest scent. White copal is sweeter-smelling than black but is not as rich or as sweet as gold copal. All three can be used interchangeably, and the choice is left to the individual.
