What is sandarac?

The sandarac tree grows in North Africa, especially in Morocco and in southeastern Spain in hot areas. It is often found in the Atlas Mountains. It can grow up to 15 m in height. The wood is dark red or brown. It belongs to the cypress family (Thuja) and the extended family of white cedar. A few days after scratching the trunk or branch, it collects golden yellow droplets of resin with a powdery surface. The sandalwood tree was cultivated by the Romans on the edge of the Sahara for its resin.
