Use of the cymbals
Tingshas (ding-shas, Tibetan cymbals) are used as a sound offering in Buddhist spiritual practices and during meditation at regular intervals to help maintain focus. Sound offerings are common in puja (prayer rituals), where various instruments are used: bells, drums, cymbals and horns. Today, tingshas are also used in feng shui, meditation, space and aura cleansing, healing work and energetic tuning.
The mantra Om Mani Padme Hum
The mantra Om Mani Padme Hum is one of the best known Tibetan mantras and is associated with Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Often translated as “the jewel in the lotus”, it symbolizes the purification of ignorance and the awakening of compassion, wisdom and inner purity. When this mantra is engraved on the cymbals, each strike of the sound supports the intention to open the heart and cultivate loving-kindness towards all beings.
Purposes of Tibetan tingsha cymbals
When you strike the two cymbals together, they create a bright, clear, high tone that cleanses the atmosphere and creates a special sense of peace. The sound is meant to awaken awareness, remind us who we truly are and help us recognize our priorities in this often turbulent and illusory world.
Tingshas and feng shui
In feng shui, tingshas are used to purify and open the energy in a room by gently striking the cymbals in each of the four corners. They are an excellent alternative to cleansing with incense when incense cannot be used or when a smokeless method of energy clearing is preferred.
Tingshas and healing sound
Besides balancing the auric field, tingshas are used to mark the beginning and end of meditation, sound baths or other spiritual practices. It is said that the sound of the cymbals brings us back into the “here and now”, briefly cutting through mental noise and grounding us in the present moment.
How to store them
After use, it is recommended to wrap the cymbals in a soft cloth or keep them in a dedicated pouch. This protects the metal from scratches and prevents damage to the cord that connects the two cymbals.
Ornaments on the cymbals
The cymbals are often decorated with dragons, mantras or the Eight Tibetan Auspicious Symbols, but they may also be left plain. Each motif carries its own meaning – from protection and wisdom to good fortune, spiritual growth and harmony – and further enriches the energetic effect of the sound.
